The Cu Chi Tunnels are located about 70km northwest of the center of Ho Chi Minh City. This unique historical site is known for its complex network of tunnels, stretching approximately 250km underground.
The tunnels were entirely built by hand, using primitive tools and traditional knowledge in wartime conditions. Recognizing its significance, the Prime Minister designated the Cu Chi Tunnels as a Special National Monument in December 2015. By 2020, the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee assigned the Department of Culture and Sports to advise on submitting a dossier to UNESCO for recognizing the Cu Chi Tunnels as a World Heritage Site.
The progress of submitting the dossier to UNESCO has completed phase 1, with a focus on criteria IV and V, which highlight the exceptional global value of the tunnels in architectural and cultural aspects, showcasing the creativity, intellect, and resilience of the Vietnamese people.
Following the approval of relevant authorities, the dossier will move to UNESCO’s World Heritage Center for consideration, leading to the potential inscription of the Cu Chi Tunnels on the World Heritage List by 2027.
The origins of the underground fortress date back to 1946 when local residents began digging tunnels for various purposes. Over time, the tunnels evolved into a vast complex spanning multiple districts, serving as a key defensive and living space during the war.
Today, only certain sections of the Cu Chi Tunnels are preserved and open for exploration, offering visitors a glimpse into the ingenious architecture and wartime history of Vietnam. The proposed area for World Heritage recognition covers approximately 17.7 hectares, including multiple tunnel systems in different villages within the Cu Chi district.
