The house is located on a quiet small hill on the outskirts of Bao Loc city, Lam Dong, surrounded by beautiful scenery. The owner was born and raised in Bao Loc but currently lives and works in Ho Chi Minh City. The house was built as a second home for the family to retreat and visit relatives in Bao Loc. During spare time, the owner will rent out the house for tourists to experience the peaceful life in the foggy city.
The land area is 168m2 (6m wide, 28m deep). According to architects Tran Ngoc Thach and Nguyen Tuan Vu, this plot of land is typically associated with small boxy houses. However, the advantage of the land is that it has three open sides. To the West is an empty plot of land, behind the house is a garden growing avocados and jackfruit, and the front faces a neighbor’s fruit tree garden.
The architects designed the house to provide a relaxing and close-to-nature experience for the nature-loving owner. They pushed the structure back by 2m to create space for motorcycle parking and plant landscapes. The fence was utilized for growing bougainvillea flowers, a strong local plant species.
Inside the house, a large circular bathroom block with plenty of sunlight was created. The separation of the bathroom functions away from the living area and bedrooms resulted in a backyard and corridor for the owner to move around. This design allowed for a closer connection to light and greenery, making the space quiet and cool. In the backyard, there are flower and plant arrangements along with seating areas for the family to enjoy coffee, barbecue, and tea to connect with nature.
The architects strategically placed openings such as glass doors, windows, and balconies on all three sides of the structure to maximize light, air, and views of the hilly landscape of the Bao Loc plateau. Regarding the environmental context, the architects mentioned that the greenery in the garden transforms harsh sunlight into cool, fresh oxygen for the owner.
The architects used Vietnamese pine wood and steel frames to build the innovative house. It took three months and a basic interior cost of 800 million VND (including WC equipment and lighting) to complete the project. The owner is completely satisfied with the cozy, intimate, and peaceful space of the house, feeling like they have returned to their family, listening to themselves to restore and enrich their inner peace.
