Ukraine launches fierce counterattack in Avdiivka

The Suriyakmaps channel reported that in the western area of Avdivka, clashes between the two sides continued in Berdychi and Tonenke with no significant changes.

The reason for Russia’s lack of progress today is due to the fierce counterattacks by Ukraine in the past few hours. Kiev’s reinforcement troops arrived at the first defense line as Russian forces were very close.

The Rybar channel reported that in the southern direction of Donetsk, Russian armed forces advanced into the industrial area of Syntezprodservis, moving along Shevchenka and Timiryazyev streets in Novomykhailivka.

In the Pobjeda area south of Marinka, Kiev forces carried out multiple counterattacks and seemed to have gained a foothold in the southern suburbs of the village.

The Suriyakmaps channel reported in southwestern Donetsk: In the past 5 days, the Russian army has seized control of new areas in Novomykhaiivka, and now their spearhead is only 500m away from the town center. Russia currently controls 35% of the village’s territory.

Ukrainska Pravda reported that the Ukrainian General Staff announced on the evening of 1/3 that Russia had carried out 20 attacks in the direction of Avdiivka and 25 attacks towards Novopavlovsky in the last 24 hours.

The report stated: “Today there were 73 clashes. In total, the enemy launched 6 missiles, conducted 79 airstrikes, and 62 artillery rocket attacks.”

The Ukrainian General Staff affirmed that their forces had repelled the Russian attacks in Liman, Bakhmut, Avdiivka, and Novopavlovsk. The enemy did not attack in the direction of Orekhov, Kupyansk, and Kherson.

In the day, Ukrainian planes carried out airstrikes on 13 areas where enemy forces were concentrated. Missile units hit 1 area with military equipment, 2 artillery positions, 3 checkpoint control posts, and 3 Russian ammunition depots, the report said.

Russia is surrounding the entire Avdiivka area

Ukrainska Pravda reported that Lieutenant Colonel of the 3rd Strike Division Maxim Zhorin stated that Russian forces are completely surrounding the entire Avdiivka area. Their third attack continues to have an effect.

Zhorin wrote on Telegram: “Of course, the enemy’s tactics have changed because one cannot wage the same type of combat in real terrain, forest belts, and urban areas. But Russia’s overall strategy remains the same: using a large number of infantry, reinforced by air force, artillery, and equipment.”

“For our division, since the moment we were sent to this direction, overall, there have been very few changes, we are constantly engaged in combat, repelling enemy attacks, or carrying out our own counterattacks,” he wrote.

Ukraine recaptures part of the territory near Avdiivka, while Russia advances towards Chasov Yar

Kyiv Independent reported that Russia has intensified its attacks on the Avdiivka area, but Ukrainian forces continue to hold their ground and have even recaptured some lost positions, General Oleksandr Tarnavskyi, commander of the Tavria forces, wrote on Telegram on 1/3.

Ukraine was forced to withdraw from Avdiivka, a key frontline city in Donetsk, on 17/2, and from other neighboring villages shortly after. Russia has intensified attacks along the front as the Ukrainian Armed Forces faced a severe shortage of ammunition due to delayed US aid.

According to General Tarnavskyi, Russian forces are intensifying artillery and infantry attacks near Avdiivka while also bolstering their reserves. Ukrainian forces have retaken lost territories in some areas and established additional artillery positions and observation posts.

He stated that in the past day, the Ukrainian army repelled 25 Russian attacks in the Avdiivka area, eliminated 319 enemy soldiers, and destroyed 36 of their equipment.

Moscow’s forces are also intensifying efforts near Chasov Yar, a town west of Bakhmut controlled by Moscow.

Illia Yevlash, spokesperson for the Khortytsia forces, told Radio Free Europe that Russia has accumulated a large force in the area and is now launching a “powerful attack” on Chasov Yar.

Russia views this city as crucial for advancing further to Kostiantynivka, Kramatorsk, and Sloviansk, Yevlash said.

“Preparations for the defense of Chasov Yar have been underway for a long time, even before the enemy took control of Bakhmut,” Yevlash noted, adding that the city is protected by minefields and anti-tank barriers.

According to the spokesperson, Russian forces are trying to identify weak points in the defense system and focusing their efforts on breaking through those points.

Czech Republic: Ukraine to receive additional artillery shells

Czech Republic Deputy Minister of Defense Jan Jires stated in an interview with Bloomberg that the first batch of 800,000 artillery shells bought for Kiev from outside the European Union (EU) under the Czech initiative could arrive in Ukraine in a few weeks.

According to him, the Czech Republic serves as an intermediary for governments wishing to fund the purchase of 155mm artillery shells in a third country for Kiev.

Jires noted that some European countries have participated in this initiative. The official declined to disclose which country is financing the purchase of artillery shells or whose reserve stock is being utilized, but hinted that the information may be revealed after the shells are delivered.

The Czech initiative is a way to “demonstrate that we are really doing something and not waiting for something to happen in Capitol Hill,” the Czech Deputy Minister of Defense added, implying stopping additional support for Kiev in US Congress.

The Czech Ministry of Defense previously stated that they were coordinating efforts and had received preliminary commitments from Canada and Denmark, as well as unnamed other countries. The Netherlands publicly declared participation, contributing 250 million euros to purchase military ammunition for Ukraine.
