Recently, social media has been circulating a video showing authorities entering a theater to check the age of the audience watching the movie Mai – a movie labeled T18 (suitable for viewers over 18 years old).
According to eyewitnesses at the theater, the surprise inspection took place at a Cinestar theater in Ho Chi Minh City on February 24 and caused the screening to pause for about 30 minutes.
The video clip has garnered a lot of attention on social media, with nearly 9 million views and almost 17,000 comments within a day of being posted. Many viewers believed that the movie Mai contains “hot” scenes, and age checks are necessary because many students do not comply with the age restrictions.
In an interview with Dan Tri reporters, a representative of Cinestar theater confirmed that the inspection by the authorities took place at one of their theaters in District 1, Ho Chi Minh City.
“The surprise inspection by the authorities did not reveal any audience members watching a movie that did not meet the age requirements during the screening,” the theater manager said.
The theater further stated that this is a standard inspection procedure that could occur at any theater, not just Cinestar.
Prior to this, Dan Tri reporters observed that at some theaters in Ho Chi Minh City, ticket checks were lax, allowing many audience members under 18 years old to purchase tickets to watch the movie Mai despite its T18 label.
Le Thanh Liem, the Chief Inspector of the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, emphasized that theaters must adhere to regulations and ensure that the age restrictions for movie viewing are followed as indicated.
“If theaters do not comply strictly, and violations are detected during inspections, we will take action. This is clearly stated in the Regulations for Film Distribution at theaters and online,” Liem stated.
The Ministry has also issued a circular to strengthen inspections and enforce laws regarding cinema at movie theaters, sending a clear message about the 6 classification levels for films, ranging from low to high: P, K, T13, T16, T18, and C.
Displaying the film classification must ensure that information about the film rating and warning content is provided in a timely manner for viewers to receive.
Regarding penalties for non-compliance, based on Decree 38/2021/ND-CP amended by Decree 128/2022/NĐ-CP for violations of film distribution regulations:
Fines ranging from 60 million VND to 80 million VND for failing to ensure that movie viewers are of the appropriate age according to the film classification.
