The woman in a tragic situation mentioned above is Ms. Vu Thi Hoa (born in 1987, residing in Truc My commune, Truc Ninh district, Nam Dinh province).

On the first day of the Lunar New Year of Giaap Thin, a reporter from Dan Tri visited the small, shabby room deep in an alley at 37 Van Tri, Minh Khai, Bac Tu Liem district, Hanoi (where Ms. Hoa rents – PV) to visit Hoa’s mother and child.

Becoming a widow at the age of 23, currently, Hoa is suffering from a malignant brain tumor (Photo: Huong Hong).

Getting through the narrow door frame, a heartbreaking scene unfolded before us. In the corner of the room, Hoa was curled up, holding her head in her hands tightly.

The widow clenches her dry, cracked lips, her eyes bulging on her emaciated face, pale… Perhaps Hoa is enduring excruciating pain due to the malignant brain tumor.

With tears pooling in her eyes, her 15-year-old son can only embrace his mother tightly. It seems the boy is fearful that if he loosens his grip, his beloved mother will be gone forever…

After struggling with a severe and excruciating headache, Hoa managed to lower her hands to the mattress and leaned against the wall. Looking up with a shrunken, sweaty face, Hoa whispered:

“My fate is perhaps predestined, I have nothing to regret. But every time I think of my son, I try to live, just to see him. He lost his father when he was just 13 months old, and if I’m no longer here, how will my son live without me!” the widow quickly covered her mouth to prevent a sob from escaping.

As the overwhelming emotions subsided, Hoa tearfully confided in us about the tragic life she’s endured: Like many young girls in the village, she married quite early. Happiness seemed to multiply when the young couple welcomed their first son (Doan Dai Nghia, born in 2009).

However, tragedy suddenly struck the young family. “In September 2010, my husband suddenly clutched his chest, struggling to breathe. We rushed him to the hospital for emergency treatment but it was too late, the fluid had completely filled his lungs… The boy was only 13 months old and lost his father…,” unable to finish her sentence, Hoa burst into tears again.

Living in a cramped and overcrowded area in the countryside, life for the young widow and her mother and child has been a struggle every step of the way. After her husband’s funeral, Hoa took her 3-year-old son to Hanoi to find work to make a living and support her child.

With her weakened strength and no assets, the single mother could only work odd jobs. With her hands full of green veins, calluses, and scars, Hoa said that for over ten years, she has done every job from washing dishes, cleaning houses to collecting scrap, earning every penny to support her son.

Another catastrophe hit the widow’s head: “At the end of 2021, I suddenly experienced severe and continuous headaches with high fevers. Thinking it was just common illness, I bought pain relief medicine. When I was in severe pain, I fainted right in the market, and people gathered around to take me to the hospital. The doctors said I had a malignant brain tumor…,” Hoa choked.

An emergency life-saving surgery took place on New Year’s Day of 2022, followed by prolonged chemotherapy and radiation treatments. On Lunar New Year’s Eve that year, the widow and her son welcomed the New Year in the hospital.

To receive treatment for the vicious disease, Hoa had to frantically borrow money from all over. She estimated that the principal debts had accumulated to more than 100 million VND. She dared not calculate the interest, as she did not know when she would be able to repay it.
