For a long time, Hà Giang has become a famous tourist destination in the northernmost region of the country with winding majestic roads and many attractive landmarks such as the Twin Mountain at the Quản Bạ Heaven’s Gate, Mã Pí Lèng Pass, Nho Quế River, Lũng Cú Flagpole, and the house of Pao that urge travelers to explore.
But few people know about a small village located in Vần Chải commune, Đồng Văn district, nestled amidst ancient forests. Since this place was chosen as the setting for the horror film “Tết ở làng địa ngục” (Tet in Hell Village) premiered at the end of October 2023 and “Kẻ ăn hồn” (Soul Eater), a sequel released in December 2023, the village of Sảo Há has been associated with a new name, “Hell Village.”
“Tết ở làng địa ngục” revolves around a secluded village deep in the forest, isolated from the outside world. This is the home of the descendants of notorious bandits who once resided here. However, the sins of their ancestors have led to a series of horrifying events happening during the lunar New Year.
In real life, Sảo Há village also shares similarities due to its isolation from the outside world. The road to the village is a steep and challenging climb, shrouded in mist almost year-round.
“We still call Sảo Há village the ‘three nos’ village because there is no electricity, water, or Wi-Fi signal. In the past, this place was virtually unknown because of its extreme isolation,” said Phạm Quốc Tiệp, Director of a travel company in Hà Giang.
However, according to the latest reports, Sảo Há village now has electricity, water, and Wi-Fi partly due to the film crew pulling resources for their work and partly due to volunteers from various places coming to support.
To access this village, visitors can only travel by foot or motorbike, as cars cannot navigate the challenging terrain. From the center of Hà Giang city, travelers can take National Route 4C through the Quản Bạ Heaven’s Gate, Cô Tiên Mountain to Dốc Thẩm Mã, then turn into Vần Chải commune. From there, visitors move to the Khó Chớ area and then inquire about the road to Sảo Há village.
The journey from the outer concrete road to the village center, which is about 2.5km away, is very steep, almost a 100% uphill climb due to the village’s high elevation on the mountain.
According to Huân, a local tour guide specialized in Hà Giang tours, the residents of Sảo Há village are all Mông ethnic people. They make a living by growing maize, corn, raising sheep and cattle, with no additional sources of income. Therefore, the villagers face many difficulties.
“At present, the village is inhabited only by the elderly and young children. Working-age youth have moved elsewhere for employment. We have known about this village for a long time, but have not had the conditions to attract tourists,” said Huân.
Thanks to the effect of the film “Tết ở làng địa ngục,” this place has become more well-known, increasing the demand for visitors to come and experience the village firsthand.
The characteristic feature of Sảo Há village is its high stone fences, about 1.5m tall, with tightly placed stones. Situated on a fog-covered high mountain, these stone fences are covered with green moss.
“Many tourists come here to enjoy the fresh air in the village and the isolated life from the modern world. However, the village still lacks tourist services to attract visitors. Those who want to experience an overnight stay in the village can ask to stay at the homes of the villagers. They are happy to agree and sometimes do not even charge for lodging,” Tiệp explained.
Formerly an obscure place that no one knew about, Sảo Há village now sees several dozen visitors every day, and during festivals or weekends, the number of tourists may be even higher.
“Besides Sảo Há village, visitors can also explore other neighboring villages or visit the weekly market of Vần Chải commune along the way to the village,” Huân added.
According to a survey by Dantri reporters, Hà Giang currently does not have scheduled tours that take tourists to Sảo Há village. However, some travel companies offer private tours to cater to the demand.
“From Hà Giang city to the village and back will take about a day due to the difficult terrain. On damp foggy days, transportation becomes even more challenging,” Tiệp noted.
Due to the rugged road conditions, Tiệp advises that inexperienced travelers, especially on slippery mountainous roads, should choose reputable tour companies to ensure safety.
“To experience the village, it is best to find reliable travel companies with experienced tour guides for a smoother journey,” Tiệp recommended.
Sảo Há village is located about 2km from the central office of Vần Chải commune, home to 22 Mông ethnic households. In recent years, the village has received attention from local authorities, focusing on developing tourism as a key task.
The development orientation of the province’s economy, culture, and society includes preserving and promoting the traditional cultural values of ethnic groups linked with the development of tourism as a key task. This is also one of the objectives of the National Target Program for Socio-Economic Development of Ethnic Minority and Mountainous Regions.
Currently, Sảo Há village is becoming more well-known and is positioned to be a popular tourist destination both domestically and internationally.
