After 20 years of construction and use, the townhouse located in a small alley in a densely populated residential area of Tan Binh district (Ho Chi Minh City) has deteriorated and no longer meets the needs of the homeowners.
Built on a 55m2 plot of land, the house is always noisy and dusty due to its location in a crowded alley, with the interior being damp, dark, and poorly lit. The kitchen and bedrooms are cramped, the rooftop is unused and neglected.
The homeowners desire to transform the living space into a comfortable, airy environment, minimizing noise while ensuring privacy.
Architect Tạ Vĩnh Phúc and team propose a dual solution: completely renovating the interior space and adding a metal “cage” at the front.
The old facade of the house is “shaved off” and replaced with a modern metal cage structure. The cage is made up of thin metal bars with varying distances, combined with a trellis on top.
According to the architects, this system includes emergency exits to ensure security in the crowded alley, as well as fire safety.
Beyond the metal cage are small garden areas, planting various types of plants to create a vibrant, lush atmosphere. These garden spaces help minimize noise from the street and enhance privacy and coziness inside. They also bring green spaces, allowing the homeowners to connect with nature and contribute positively to the street landscape.
Inside the house, the concrete staircase in the middle is replaced with a combination of metal and wooden stairs, paired with a skylight. An additional skylight at the end of the house provides light and fresh air to the kitchen and dining area.
The entire front space is reserved for the living room, main hall, and a garden area.
The main bedroom and bathroom on the second floor are moved to the front, utilizing large enclosed walls to make use of light and views of the lush “hanging garden.”
Behind that is a workspace with gentle natural light from a skylight. The third floor is set back 2m from the second floor, including a second bedroom, bathroom, and prayer room. The front garden in front of the prayer room creates a secluded and relaxing space.
The house named “Nhà lồng” was completed in 2022 by ROOM+ Design & Build.
