According to SCMP, a coffee shop in Guangxi province (China) launched a spicy latte coffee in December last year. Each coffee cup costs 20 yuan (more than 67,000 dong), and the shop has sold 300 cups each day so far.
A video circulating on social media shows shop staff adding sliced chili to the iced latte cup before pouring chili powder into the drink before serving customers.
“I think this dish is not very spicy, on the contrary, it tastes very delicious,” one employee said, adding that the new coffee dish is not as unusual as people think.
This person said they asked for feedback from customers and received positive responses.
“This new spicy latte is not bad. It has a slightly spicy and sweet taste,” a consumer app user said.
Chinese media outlets have widely reported on the strange chili coffee.
“I was stunned. It’s really illogical in a bizarre way,” one commenter said.
“I think customers may have health problems after drinking this coffee cup,” another sarcastically remarked.
“It’s creative. But I dare not try it because I’m afraid it may cause discomfort to the stomach,” another person said.
The creative combination of coffee flavors has appeared across China in recent years. In September 2023, customers lined up for hours to buy a coffee drink mixed with alcohol.
Last year, a coffee shop in Jiangsu province mixed crushed eggs with latte coffee. This trend quickly spread and many other coffee shops followed suit.
In 2021, a coffee shop in Son Tay province added vinegar to the Americano coffee. This province is famous for vinegar-related products, and locals also like to use vinegar as a dipping sauce.
