Yesterday (27/2), the Korean Football Association (KFA) decided to appoint Hwang Sun Hong as the interim head coach of the national team. He will lead the South Korean team in two matches against Thailand in the World Cup 2026 qualifiers in March.

After being appointed, Hwang Sun Hong expressed his great ambition. He said, “I will do my utmost to help South Korean football return to its former strength. There were concerns that I would have to prepare with the South Korean U23 team for the Asian U23 Championship (also the Olympic qualifiers for 2024).

However, I have discussed thoroughly with my colleagues. We are still preparing the best for the Asian U23 Championship in April. I will be responsible for the results of the South Korean national team. I will make every effort not to pay the price. I hope everyone will support the national team.”

Hwang Sun Hong, 55, began his coaching career in 2008. Throughout his career, he has coached teams in the K-League such as Busan IPark, Pohang Steelers, FC Seoul, and Daejeon Hana Citizen. In 2021, he started coaching the South Korean U23 team.

In his career, Hwang Sun Hong has won the K-League twice with Pohang Steelers (2013) and FC Seoul (2016). Additionally, he helped the South Korean U23 team win the 2023 ASIAD in China.

One of Hwang Sun Hong’s advantages is that he has worked with many Korean players in the youth team. Therefore, he is expected to adapt easily to the South Korean national team.

The Korean Football Association has postponed the selection of a long-term head coach for the national team until June. There is a high probability that they will choose a young coach from the domestic league. Coaches like Hong Myung Bo (Ulsan Hyundai) and Kim Ki Dong (FC Seoul) are highly regarded.

However, at this time, the Korean football authorities cannot choose these two coaches as the Korean national league is about to start (on March 1). They do not want to disrupt or affect the K-League clubs before the new season. This is the main reason why the KFA has appointed an interim coach.
