The potential re-election of former President Donald Trump could result in a reorganization of the U.S. intelligence community, according to an article published on February 27 by Politico. The article interviewed 18 intelligence officials, some of whom were appointed by Trump and later criticized him. They said that Trump’s restructuring plan could “undermine the credibility of American intelligence.”

“Trump intends to restructure the intelligence community. He started that process before and will do it again. Part of the process is rooting out and punishing individuals,” a former senior intelligence official said.

If Trump is re-elected in November, he will replace “those considered enemies of his political agenda with loyal but inexperienced individuals,” according to Politico’s summary of the criticisms of Trump.

Specifically named individuals include former Director of National Intelligence (DNI) Richard Grenell and aide Kash Patel, who played a key role in declassifying documents related to the origins of the Russiagate scandal (allegations of Russian interference in the U.S. election).

Other former Trump appointees interviewed for the article include former National Security Advisor John Bolton and Fiona Hill, a top advisor on Russia at the National Security Council.

“He wants to weaponize the intelligence community. If he knows something, he will use it to blindfold us,” former advisor Hill said.

Some officials speaking on condition of anonymity warned that Trump’s potential reorganization could pose dangers to “sources and methods” used by U.S. intelligence, as well as undermine the trust of U.S. allies, something the Biden administration has been trying to rebuild.

Last December, a diplomat from a NATO member country, speaking on condition of anonymity, described Trump’s re-election and actual restructuring of the U.S. government as a “doomsday scenario.”

Others expressed concerns that appointing controversial figures could lead to resignations among high-ranking officials and lower-level employees.

“There are thousands of people working hard, often in dangerous places, sacrificing a lot for their country. If their jobs are terminated by the commander-in-chief, it is truly sad,” said Jon Darby, former executive director of the National Security Agency (NSA), in an interview with Politico.

Last December, President Biden stated that if his predecessor Donald Trump is re-elected, the democracy of the United States will be “threatened.”

Trump is currently a leading Republican presidential candidate, while Biden is the Democratic candidate. Therefore, the possibility of a Trump-Biden rematch in this year’s election is very high.
