On February 27, Bãi Cháy Hospital (Quang Ninh) announced that doctors at the hospital had successfully rescued an elderly patient suffering from respiratory failure, acute blood breakdown, severe anemia, and critical condition due to poisoning from loc mai leaves.
The patient, Mr. N.T. (88 years old, residing in Hai Ha district, Quang Ninh province), had a history of high blood pressure. Upon admission for emergency treatment, the patient exhibited jaundice, fatigue, poor appetite, frequent vomiting, loose stools, painful urination, and pale red urine.
Doctors gathered information from the family and learned that Mr. T. had picked loc mai leaves grown at home to make a drink to self-treat constipation.
After clinical examination and in-depth tests, doctors diagnosed the patient with respiratory failure, acute blood breakdown, severe anemia, liver and lung damage due to poisoning from loc mai leaves. Mr. T.’s condition was complex and critical.
The patient was treated with blood transfusion, antibiotics, detoxification, and intensive care according to the protocol. Currently, the patient’s health has stabilized, with improved respiratory, liver enzymes, and blood breakdown indexes.
Loc mai is a common medicinal plant found in some northern provinces of Vietnam.
According to traditional medicine, loc mai leaves have a mild taste, neutral properties, and can aid in digestion (small doses), detoxification, and disinfection.
It is a common belief among the people to drink loc mai leaf water to treat constipation, colitis, etc. However, improper use or high doses can lead to poisoning.
Dr. Tran Cong Can, from the Intensive Care and Toxicology Department at Bãi Cháy Hospital, stated: “Symptoms of loc mai leaf poisoning include rapid heart rate, weakness, green skin, indigestion, bloating, abdominal pain, loose or constipated stools, red urine due to pigments in the leaves, frequent and painful urination… Severe cases can lead to acute blood breakdown, severe anemia, liver and kidney failure, multiple organ failure, and rapid death.”
Doctors at Bãi Cháy Hospital advise people not to use loc mai leaves on their own for medicinal purposes. If symptoms of poisoning occur, it is crucial to seek immediate medical attention at the nearest healthcare facility, rather than attempting home remedies or traditional treatments.
