On February 27, the award ceremony for the Vietnam Writers’ Association Prize 2023 and the review of the first phase of the literary creation campaign on the theme of children’s literature took place in Hanoi. The event brought together many writers from different generations with notable works in the past year in genres such as Prose, Poetry, Critical Theory, and Children’s Literature.

Among the 6 works that won the Vietnam Literature Prize 2023, 3 works received the Prose Award: the novel “From Friday to Ninth Hour” by writer Nguyen Mot from the Writers’ Association Publishing House; the novel “Lost Without a Trace” by writer Nguyen Viet Ha from Tre Publishing House; the collection of short stories “A Summer under the Tree Shade” by writer Nguyen Tham Thien Ke from the Writers’ Association Publishing House.

The Criticism Award was given to the work “Literary Autonomy and the Mission of Freedom” by authors Phung Ngoc Kien and Doan Anh Duong from the Writers’ Association Publishing House.

The Children’s Literature Award went to the work “The Fish Linh Goes to School,” a story by writer Le Quang Trang. The Young Author Award this year was given to author Duc Anh for the novel “Living Two Lives.”

Writer Le Thi Kim (in Ho Chi Minh City) and writer Tran Thi Truong (in Hanoi) received the Impressive Female Writer Award.

Poet Nguyen Phuc Loc Thanh was the only author to win an award in the Poetry category – the Vietnam Writers’ Association Prize 2023. This is the first time that the work “Withered Lotus” by poet Nguyen Phuc Loc Thanh received 100% of the votes from the preliminary to the final round of judging.

During the award ceremony, poet Nguyen Phuc Loc Thanh expressed his gratitude and honor for this achievement, emphasizing the beauty and purpose of poetry in reaching for the sublime.

He mentioned that poetry does not necessarily have to deal with worldly affairs like prose. Poetry, in its essence, transcends and rises above, breaking free from all dependence. Poetry exists on a higher level than prose. The mission of poetry is to seek beauty.

He shared, “The pure, good, and beautiful values of poetry quietly nurture moral excellence and contribute to transforming society, similarly to the direct confrontation with evil, corruption, and tyranny… in prose. However, poetry does not choose the path of force and violence,” Nguyen Phuc Loc Thanh shared.

Moved by receiving the Prize for Prose at the Vietnam Writers’ Association Prize 2023, writer Nguyen Mot said that the winning works may not necessarily be the best books of Vietnamese literature in 2023.

Most choices are relative, but he and the authors believe that the choices of the Councils and Executive Boards recognize the voices of hearts, the humane gaze, and the “mood of life” in the works.

Receiving this award, they feel extremely proud but also responsible. They will continue to strive, to write meaningful stories that reflect the mood of our lives today to bridge people with people, making the world closer and more loving.

They believe that through each book, people can understand each other more, empathize, and share more.

According to writer Nguyen Binh Phuong, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Writers’ Association, the number of works participating in the annual literary awards is generally stable, with a fairly even distribution in the two categories of poetry and prose, while the number of critical theory works is slightly lower than in previous years.

The most outstanding feature of this year’s awards is the creativity and courage of the selection council, recognizing works with an open-minded and daring view of art.

In poetry, awarding “Withered Lotus” by Nguyen Phuc Loc Thanh not only acknowledges the quality of a collection of poems with many unique pieces attaining a spiritual depth.

It is also a tribute to the achievement of an author reaching maturity in all aspects, both in worldview and artistic expression techniques. Furthermore, awarding “Withered Lotus” also recognizes the spirit of a poet who is not hesitant in creativity and traditional genre challenges, which have already reached high levels of achievement.

In the prose category, awarding three works at the same time – “Lost Without a Trace” by Nguyen Viet Ha, “From Friday to Ninth Hour” by Nguyen Mot, and the collection of short stories “A Summer under the Tree Shade” by Nguyen Tham Thien Ke, with three different styles and even three different artistic views, shows the open-minded spirit of the Executive Board in assessment, accepting all tendencies and artistic styles.

Speaking at the ceremony, poet Nguyen Quang Thieu – Chairman of the Vietnam Writers’ Association – affirmed that the award-winning authors today have brought a new spirit, appearance, and path to the literary life.

They are all determined, willing to traverse old paths and norms, surpassing the “walls” of the past to find their own way to “touch” the hearts of readers. With different genres, the works seem to be rediscovering forgotten values, prompting us to appreciate this life more.
