On the morning of March 4, in an exchange with a reporter from Dân Trí newspaper, Senior Lieutenant Nguyen Danh Bang, Chief of Police of Buon Ho town (Dak Lak province), confirmed that the unit had received a report from a woman in the area, reflecting an accident in which she fell down an elevator while shopping; The police agency is currently verifying the incident.
According to the report from Ms. Le Thi Diem Quynh (31 years old, residing in Chư Kbô commune, Krông Buk district, Dak Lak province), on July 14, 2023, she and her husband went to shop at Store C. (in An Binh ward, Buon Ho town) to buy goods.
At the store, Ms. Quynh was guided by store employee Truong Thi M.T. (25 years old) to take the elevator to the second floor to view the items. While the elevator was moving, it suddenly fell freely with great force, causing both Ms. Quynh and the female employee to be injured and rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment.
At the Central Highlands Regional General Hospital, Ms. Quynh was diagnosed with paralysis in both legs and had to undergo emergency surgery. The medical records from the hospital clearly show that Ms. Quynh is paralyzed, with no sensation in both legs from the knees down, a fracture in the L1 spinal cord, and screws and rods in the spine.
During the medical examination, the doctors found out that Ms. Quynh was over 6 weeks pregnant. However, due to her severe injuries from the fall, the use of antibiotics, and other factors, the fetus was affected and Ms. Quynh had to terminate the pregnancy.
Ms. Quynh stated that after the accident, her family focused on her medical treatment and did not think about filing a claim for compensation. In addition, Store C. also expressed their willingness to cover the treatment costs and gave Ms. Quynh’s family 88 million VND to help with her recovery.
However, Ms. Quynh noticed that the store did not fulfill their promises and commitments, so her family sought legal assistance to claim their rights, as the accident had serious consequences, causing her paralysis and the loss of her child.
Ms. Quynh’s family has submitted a request to the local People’s Procuracy Office to conduct an expert assessment of the extent of the health damage as evidence in the case.
Store C. declined to comment to the reporter and stated that they had delegated their lawyer to handle the case.
In connection with the incident, store employee Ms. T. admitted that on the day of the incident, she had only been working for 4 days. She had not been instructed by the store owner regarding any regulations related to the elevator, and she saw other employees taking customers to the elevator to go up to the upper floor to view the items, so she did the same.
“I suffered injuries to my leg, and the treatment process has been improving. The store compensated me with about 20 million VND before I quit. But if Ms. Quynh files a lawsuit, I am willing to testify in court about the truth of the incident,” the female employee affirmed.
