The Minister of Defense of Russia, Sergei Shoigu, stated that Ukraine has lost more than 444,000 soldiers in the 2-year conflict. He mentioned that due to the decisive actions of the Russian military, the combat capability of the Ukrainian army is gradually decreasing. On average, Ukraine is losing over 800 soldiers and 120 different weapons each day since the beginning of the year.
Shoigu also revealed that since the conflict started 2 years ago, Ukraine has lost more than 444,000 soldiers. This number is significantly higher than the 31,000 casualties reported by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky last weekend. Shoigu emphasized that the high attrition rate of Ukraine is evidence of a strategy aimed at containing Russia, at the cost of Ukrainian lives.
Regarding recent military operations in Ukraine, Shoigu mentioned that Russian forces have gained control of 3 villages in Donetsk province, Eastern Ukraine. He stated that Russia has expanded its control over 327 km² of Ukrainian territory in various directions since the beginning of the year.
Shoigu described Ukraine’s attempt to stabilize the situation after failed counterattacks by relying on reserve forces as a desperate effort to prevent the collapse of their defense lines. He also noted that Russia initiated a “special military operation” in Ukraine in February 2022, with no signs of de-escalation in sight.
Ukraine considers Zelensky’s “10-point peace formula” as the basis for any negotiations to end the conflict with Russia. One of the demands includes the complete withdrawal of Russian troops from the internationally recognized borders of Ukraine, including Crimea. Russia’s Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, criticized Ukraine’s peace proposal as a “last resort” and condemned Western military aid to Ukraine, warning that it could escalate and prolong the conflict.
The Kremlin warned that any attempt by Western countries to deploy troops to Ukraine could lead to direct conflict between Russia and NATO. Lavrov also criticized the West for presenting Zelensky’s peace formula as the only solution, calling it unattainable and a threat to Russia.
